History and Origin of the Havanese

Like the history of most breeds the precise development of the Havanese is Shrouded in mystery. What agreeably seems to be assumed by the reasurchers is that during the days of the Spanish Empire, a small, white silky-coated dog breed roamed the streets in the Mediterranean area, variously identified as the LIttle Silk Dog, the Melita, or the Caniche. Following the discoveries by Christopher Columbus and other daring and adventerous wanderers, sea lanes opened the way for voyages to newly discovered parts of the world. Recognizing the appeal of these friendly little dogs, sailors and sea captians transported them from continent to continent, offering them as items of barter or to gain entry into the homes of wealthy families.
In some of these far ports, the dogs were purposely and cautiously cross-bred with other breeds to produce new pure-bred members of what we know as the Bichon family. Thus were developed the breeds eventully identified as the Buchon Frise, the Maltese, the Lowchen, the Bolognese, and the Havanese--Each remaining small, strudy and appealing, yet distinguished from the others.
