Many researchers theorise that the breed originated with the dogs brought by the Spanish when they colonized the West Indies, Presumably identifying the Teneriffe and the Bichon Frise as it's progenitors. Jones and Hamilton suggested the breed's Origin in the Western Mediterranean area, later to arrive in Cuba. Dechambre's theory descends the breed from the "Bichon Maltese", Believing it was introduced to the West Indies by the Spaniards, and further identifies it as "The Havana Silk Dog". Giorenzo Fioroni predicated its origin to crosses between the "Italian Bichon Bolognese" and the toy South American Poodle (a now extinct breed) in Argentina before its arrival in Cuba. The Cubans embrace the belief that the dog originally came to their island with Italian sea captians, thus indicating Malta or Bologna as the source. |
