Article 2: Winter Advisory: Keeping pets safe and warm.

The Big Chills: Hypothermia and Frostbite
Animals that are left outdoors in freezing Temperatures with inadequate protection are prone to hypothermia and frostbite. If hypothermia is suspected, owners should be instructed to bring the pet to the Clinic immediately. If the owner does try to warm the animal(with blankets, a heater, etc), it is essential that only tthe pets abdomen and thorax are warmed; warming extrmites first can cause the animal to go into shock.

Frostbite occurs the most commonly on paws, ears, tails and genitals after exposure to extrem cold. Affected areas beomce pale, cool to the touch and cyanotic. Affected body parts are unlickly to have sensation until thawing begins. They then become red, swollen and very painful. Frostbitten areas should not be rubbed in an effort to warm them. Many forstbitten areas that at first seemed to warrant amputation have recovered with diligent treatment. In pets with hypothermia and /or frostbite, rewarming to rapidly can cause other problems, including reperfusion injuries, coagulopathy, metablic abnormalites and arrhythmia. Clients should be reminded that treating hypothermia or frostbite requires prompt attention from veterinary professionals.
